Dial 1031. Kejriwal gives simpler number to report the corrupt

The Capital got an easy to remember 1031 anti-corruption helpline number from chief minister Arvind Kejriwal on Friday, two days after he gave out a normal eight-digit landline.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader had promised a simpler number. Even otherwise, the older helpline (011-27357169) was a huge hit, receiving 11,352 calls.

Some were quirky, one even from a girl with boyfriend troubles, but many were from troubled commoners.

Kejriwal said, “One Delhi government official has been caught following a complaint to the helpline.” He said 16 cases were ripe for sting operations to nab corrupt officials.

On Wednesday, he had shared the spirit behind the helpline, saying it would assist citizens in setting up stings to catch the corrupt.

“This helpline number makes every citizen of Delhi an anti-corruption inspector. State vigilance department has a team which will look into the matter.”

He had explained, “People can call the anti-corruption helpline and give their details to those manning the phones. They will then get a call back to ascertain the details of the operation and will be subsequently coached on how to trap those offering the bribes.”

Kejriwal said the idea of the helpline was to instill fear in the hearts of the corrupt. “People have to mend their ways or end up in jail. Corrupt people will develop the fear of being under surveillance.”

The AAP leader also said the Delhi Police were on standby in case additional resources were needed to tackle the call flow and functioning of the anti-graft helpline.

After taking oath as the chief minister on December 28, Kejriwal had announced launch of such a helpline.

Riding high on its spectacular electoral debut in Delhi, the barely 15-month-old AAP said it wanted to clean national politics and offer a third alternative — other than the Congress and the BJP — to the electorate.

Kejriwal, 45, had recently made an impassioned plea for a corruption-free Delhi in the state assembly. “I’m not seeking support for my party or my government,” the CM had said ahead of a floor test in the House.

“How many members in the House stand by the aam aadmi in his fight to uproot corrupt politics; how many members... want to establish the politics of truth and honesty?” he said.
