It is the seat that will decide the fate of not one but two chief ministerial contenders.

In the fray were incumbent chief minister Sheila Dikshit, who is hoping for a record fourth term, Arvind Kejriwal, Aam Aadmi Party leader who has turned the battle for Delhi a triangular one for the first time, and the BJP’s Vijender Gupta, who once headed the Delhi unit of the party.

The interest this constituency generated could be gauged by the fact that the Delhi electoral office website had an exclusive link for live updates on polling in the segment. It received two lakh hits within an hour-and-a-half causing the website to crash. It was removed later.

“We received tremendous response to our live updates link for the New Delhi segment,” said Ankur Garg, chief nodal officer

In the voters queues, youngsters waited to press the button to usher in a change. But the elders said they would prefer the “tried and tested” parties. “I wanted to vote for a party that would bring in a refreshing change. But my parents have always been staunch Congress supporters and I have had to vote for them as well,” said Rachna Kumari, a resident of the DIZ area in Gole Market.

At each nook and cranny of the assembly segment, groups of people had gathered to discuss the voting trends. On the priority list of issues were women safety, price rise and corruption. “People are fed up of corruption. They want change now,” said Nishit Yadav, a resident of Baba Kharag Singh Marg.
