In a veiled attack on Narendra Modi, Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit said her government had ensured harmony during the last 15 years in the Capital and there had been no riots in the city.

Modi, who was named the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) prime ministerial candidate for the 2014 general elections, carries the baggage of the 2002 Gujarat riots.

Addressing party workers at Bharti Artist Colony in east Delhi, Dikshit wondered if there was any link between the elevation of Modi and communal riots in Muzzaffar Nagar in western Uttar Pradesh, which left 43 people dead.

“We maintained peace and tranquility whereas the opposition is taking the route of riots to capture power. They have become impatient being in the opposition for a long period and have been disturbing communal harmony,” Dikshit said.

The Delhi BJP is relying heavily on the Modi factor this elections. Even before the central leadership announced him as the PM candidate, several ticket aspirants started using his photograph on their banners and posters.

Modi is likely to address a huge rally in Delhi on September 29 and the BJP has formed special teams to make arrangements. The BJP attributed its victory in the Delhi University Student Union elections to the Modi factor.

The Congress’ all India general secretary and in-charge of Delhi elections Shakeel Ahmed, however, had a different view. “Modi was declared as the BJP’s PM candidate at 6 pm while the voting for DUSU ended at 5 pm. I don’t see a link between the two,” Ahmed said.

Targeting the BJP for promising a 30% reduction in electricity tariff, east Delhi MP Sandeep Dikshit said electricity tariff in Delhi was still one of the lowest in the country and showed figures on how several BJP-run states had higher a power tariff.

Delhi Health minister and area MLA Ashok Kumar Walia said the meeting was organised to motivate the party cadres before the assembly elections and give them a detailed brief of the government’s achievements, which the workers should share with the people of Delhi.
