Congress nominee for Shujalpur assembly constituency in Madhya Pradesh, Mahendra Joshi, was attacked by a rival faction of his own party on Friday when he was on his way to Shahjapur, about 95 kms north-east of Indore, on the last day of filing of nominations.

Joshi escaped with minor injuries but four other people accompanying him were badly injured and were admitted to a Shahjapur hospital for treatment.

Incidentally, the dissent over non-denial of ticket in Congress party is increasing day by day. On Thursday, a Congress leader, Narsingh Malviya, had committed suicide in Agar after bing denied ticket by the party.

Sources said that the attack on Joshi took place at village Bolai, between Shujalpur and Shahjapur allegedly by supporters of Yogendra Singh, who was among the ticket aspirants.

The attackers used school children to block the road, dragged out all the occupants and beat them up. The injured included Govind Rajput, Mohan Raman, J P Pawar and Vishnu Sharma.

On Thursday, Singh’s supporters had also burnt the effigy of Joshi.

Joshi condemned the attack and said, “It’s a shameful incident.”
