Punjabi pop singer Jasbir Jassi has become the only Indian artist to be invited for performing at the ongoing 65th Cannes International Film Festival in France, and he wishes to showcase India, both through his singing and clothes.
The 42-year-old singer, famous for hit numbers such as Dil Le Gayee Kudi Gujarat Di, Kudi Kudi and Nishani Pyar Di, will be performing at the Incredible India party, which will take place today at the French Riviera city.
“It is a dream show for me. It is one of the biggest opportunities for an artist. I will be giving a three-hour long live performance for which I have been preparing for months.”
When asked how he got the opportunity, Jassi says, “The National Film Development Corporation (NFDC) was looking for an artist to perform at Cannes who had intrinsic knowledge about traditional music. They were looking for someone who could perform Indian music inter-mixed with western genres. Some NFDC officials had earlier seen some of my live concerts, and that’s how they chose my name.”
Elaborating on his act, he says, “I want people to get the taste of actual Indian music and not just Bollywood. I am going to inter-mix Indian music genres such as sufi, bhangra, pop, Bollywood and Punjabi folk with global music. I want listeners from various parts of the world to know about the stories of Heer-Ranjha and Mirza, and even Gurbaani.”
For his act at Cannes, Jassi will don a traditional Punjabi jacket (right), which he picked from a store in Janpath market. “Jassi chose clothes that have the traditional Punjabi motifs, not just for himself but his entire troupe,” says Harinder Singh, of the store ‘1469’.
