Netherlands enjoyed 64% of the possession against Costa Rica but could not beat the lower-ranked team in normal and extra-time.

The Dutch finally defied their dodgy history to subdue the plucky Costa Ricans in a penalty shootout, but would feel they could have won in regular play.

Costa Rican goalkeeper Keylor Nevas made multiple heroic saves. The Dutch, however, will be more aggrieved about the post and the crossbar.

Diminutive Dutch midfield star Wesley Sneijder struck the post and the crossbar once each.

Then there was a goal-line save, with a liberal dose of help from the crossbar again! The goal-bound shot went off Costa Rican midfielder Yeltsin Tejada’s leg to the crossbar.

Even as the deadlock continued, Twitter wits kept their tempo up. Here’s a look at the lively action on the microblogging site during the match.

Fans we're clearly miffed about Robben's penchant for diving

Some even claimed Robben is 'Brazuca Man'

Netherlands looked more adept at hitting the cross bar than the back of the net

The Netherlands showed an enormous lack of positional awareness and went on to concede an eye watering 13 offsides

The Dutch though dominated with 64% of possesion
