World Cup 2014 : Germany win the title, but Twitter sets the record

Germany won the World Cup with a 1-0 extra time victory over Argentina on Sunday in Rio de Janeiro.

Though there were no goals in regulation time, there was plenty of action, and both sides rued some missed chances.

Mario Götze, a substitute for Miroslav Klose, scored the winner in the 113th minute. Götze controlled a cross from Andre Schuerrle off his chest and beautifully finished it with his left foot. The shot went past Argentina’s goalkeeper, Sergio Romero, inside the six-yard box.

The tense final generated 32.1 million tweets.

The World Cup final set a new Twitter record for tweets per minute for an event: 618,725 TPM at 6:37pm Brazil time for Germany winning the World Cup.

The final match saw the second highest total tweets per match at 32.1 million, only behind the Brazil vs Germany semi-final match which saw 35.6 million.

Though the Germans have won the title, they will be remembered for quashing Brazil 7-1 in the semi-final.
