India's leading discus thrower Vikas Gowda set a meet record of 65.82m, a season's best, during the Mesa Track and Field Classic held in Arizona last weekend. The previous record of 63.89m was set in 2006 by Adam Kuehl.
On his way to winning gold, Vikas also achieved the B qualification mark of 64m for the World athletics championships beginning August 10 at Moscow. A qualification mark is 66m.
Deru wins silver
New Delhi: Jamjang Deru gave India the first medal in the World Youth Weightlifting Championships as he won a silver in the 50kg boys category on the opening day at Tashkent, Uzbekistan. Deru won the silver in clean and jerk with an effort of 110kg and finished fourth in the total lift with 195kg. He lifted 85kg in snatch. In the girls 44kg category, Chandrika Tarafdar finished seventh, while Poonam Dalal was 15th. The event serves as a qualification for 2014 Youth Olympic Games.
Rajput misses target
New Delhi: Rifle shooter Sanjeev Rajput narrowly missed out on qualification for the final of the men's 50m rifle 3 position event after finishing 10th at the ISSF World Cup that concluded Tuesday in Changwon, Korea. He shot 1144. The other Indian shooters in the fray were Surendra Singh Rathod (1137), who finished 17th. Chain Singh shot 1135 to finish 20th.
New Delhi: To prepare the national women's team for the World League Round 3, beginning June, Hockey India has appointed Australian Matthew Tredrea as technical advisor with the squad. Apart from the senior girls, Tredrea would also oversee the fitness part of the junior team that is preparing for the world cup.
Gangey hits 206
New Delhi: Avinash Gangey's 206 and Nipun Malhotra's 134 helped Raghubir Willowers beat DTC in the DDCA league. Chetan Sharma and Digvijay Singh's centuries helped FCI beat Rohtak Road Gymkhana. In other games, Three Star, MTNL, LB Shastri Coaching Centre and Delhi Police won their games.
