Bowing to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) directive, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) is expected to give affiliation to disciplines that are on the Summer and Winter Olympics curriculum, during their special general body meeting on Thursday.
The IOC, in its communication to the IOA on September 26, had stated that before the office-bearers of the apex sports body are elected on November 25, a majority of the national sports federations (NSFs) that represent the country in the Olympic Games, should be allowed to cast their votes. "It should be strictly respected in the perspective of the IOA elections on November 25, and in future too," the IOC letter had further stated.
In all probability, at least four NSFs — Indian Golf Union (IGU), Ice Skating Association of India (ISAI), Ice Hockey Association of India (IHAI) and Indian Amateur Luge Association (IALA) — are expected to get affiliation. Golf will make its debut at the Olympic Games during the 2016 edition.
Although India's luge competitor, Shiva Keshavan, has been the flag-bearer at the Winter Olympic Games, the national body hasn't got the IOA nod so far. The Winter Games Federation (WGF), however, is affiliated. As per the IOA website, there are 25 Summer Olympic Games disciplines that are part of its electoral mandate. Apart from this issue, the IOA is also expected to announce the details of its election procedure, including the nomination date and appointment of the returning officer. The issue of suspension of tainted IOA officials could also be on the agenda.
