American Jordan Oliver had a late takedown to beat Russia’s Magomed Kurbanaliev in the opening match Sunday in United 4 Wrestling, a three-team exhibition tournament using new rules approved a day earlier in Moscow in a bid to keep wrestling in the Olympics beyond 2016.

Under the changes approved by the sport’s international governing body, matches are now made up out of two 3-minute sessions instead of three 2-minute periods, and scoring is cumulative instead of the previous two-out-of-three system.

The International Olympic Committee removed wrestling as one of the core sports in February.

It is now one of eight sports competing for an open slot at the 2020 Games.

Doubles title for Chinese Taipei
Paris: Chinese Taipei’s Chen Chien-An and Chuang Chih-Yuan upset Hao Shuai and Ma Lin from China to win the men's doubles title at the World Table Tennis Championships here.

Chen and Chuang fought back from one game down to win three in a row but Ma, former Olympic Champion, and Hao Shuai took the fifth before the Chinese Taipei tandem sealed the victory Sunday by taking the sixth 11-8, reports Xinhua.

Defending champion Zhang Jike of China retained his men’s singles title defeating compatriot Wang Hao in the final. Fourth seed Zhang prevailed 11-7, 11-8, 6-11, 14-12, 5-11, 11-7 in a rematch of last year’s Olympic final to secure a fourth major title in a row.
