Though they do not have representation at the Olympic Games, Tibetans are organising their own version in May at the headquarters of Tibetan government-in-exile. The Tibetans Olympics will be organised at Macleodganj and the surrounding areas around Dharamsala from May 15 to 25, said its
organiser Lobsang Wangyal.

The Tibetan government-in-exile has its headquarters in Dharamsala while the Dalai Lama lives in Macleodganj, some nine km from here.

Wangyal, who heads a company which recently organised a Miss Tibet contest, said Tibetans living outside their homeland could participate in the games.

"Since Tibetans are living as refugees as they do not have any country of their own, Tibetan Olympics is being organised to give them a feel of the Games," he added.

The idea was floated in March last year, he said.

Disciplines will include long distance running, swimming, shooting, archery and track and field events.

Prize money will be Rs. one lakh, Rs. 50,000 and Rs. 25,000 for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place finishers in various events, Wangyal said.

So far 30 participants, 15 men and as many women, have registered themselves for the Games, he said.

The "Olympic Torch" was lit on January 30 this year and it is travelling over various parts of the world and at present is in Hawaii.
