When India’s summer T20 league is on, it’s customary for the phone to ring off the hook. But, for a Jaipur-based lawyer the reason for incessant phone calls is not friends wanting to share every four and six but rather a goof-up by the league’s media team.

Rajasthan High Court advocate Anil Kumar Tailor’s number has been erroneously given as the number of RCA’s Manish Kumar, venue manager of the Sawai Man Singh Stadium, in the league’s media advisory e-mails that have been sent to all the covering journalists.

The faux pas has seen Tailor being inundated with calls from journalists asking everything from press conference timings to freebie match passes.

“I’ve got about 20 calls from journalists asking me about press conference timings, media entry gate, some match passes. It’s ridiculous. Since phones are not allowed in the chambers, I handed the phone to a junior. He got another 15 calls,” a peeved Tailor told HT.

At the heart of this goof-up is the most Indian of numbers - 0. Ancient Indian mathematicians had enlightened the western world with the concept of 0. The BCCI, maybe, hasn’t paid notice — a real shame if you consider that the astronomical financial sums the board deals in wouldn’t be possible without the concept of zero. Tailor’s mobile number is exactly the same as the number of RCA’s Kumar, except that the sixth numeral of the 10-digit phone number, which is 9 in the lawyer’s case and 0 in the case of the RCA’s venue manager.

“It’s a big blunder, they should correct it immediately. I’ll be damned if I have to keep answering all these calls from journalists,” he said.

Well, all this at least proves one thing — nobody wants to answer a phone and hear the nervous quack of a hack … that, and the BCCI isn’t very good with numbers. Income tax officials please take note!
