Six bookies arrested, cash worth 4.7 lakh recovered

Six bookies were arrested in two raids at Govandi and Ghatkopar and seized eight mobile phones and cash worth Rs. 4.72 thousand from the accused on Sunday night. Deonar police is investigating if the bookies had any links those held by the crime branch in the spot fixing case.

Iqbal Ansari, 33; Mehboob Ansari, 32; Shafiq Shaikh, 32 and Ganesh Bhosale, 40 were arrested in a raid at a shop in Kena market area of Govandi while  Rashid Kalmadi, 23; and Jeevan Poojari, 24 were arrested from a videogame parlour at Ghatkopar.

Based on specific information, a team raided the shop at Deonar and caught four bookies while accepting bets on the final match between Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians, said senior inspector of police at Deonar, Prahlad Panaskar.

"The four arrested bookies told us about two more bookies that operated from a videogame parlour based at 90 feet road in Ghatkopar, and arrested the accused," he said.

The police in the two raids have seized eight mobile phones and cash worth Rs. 4.72 lakh from the possession of the accused. Lakhmi Gautam, deputy commissioner of police Zone-6 said, "It is too early to jump any conclusion. Investigations are on."

Police stated that they were keeping a watch on the shop since 8 pm after which it was raided with help of an informer. "The accused arrested in Ghatkopar have named one more person in the city. We are investigating if more persons are involved," said Panaskar.
