There is an air of anticipation within the inner circles of the BCCI following the submission of the report by Justice Mukul Mudgal in the Supreme Court. This was accompanied by a request for an extension of two months for the committee to complete the remaining part of its investigation.

The inquiry period may have kept N Srinivasan out of the BCCI’s top seat, but it is well known as to who calls the shots. Eager to reclaim his position as president of the Board, Srinivasan’s future in the BCCI, and to an extent in the ICC, hinges on the findings of the report.

In the event of inconclusive findings and the Mudgal Committee obtaining an extension, the BCCI has thought of challenging the decision, citing operational impediments owing to the ad-hoc arrangement, which have led to a backlog.

The mandatory working committee meeting which clears all matters to be ratified in the AGM, has not been held yet. Alternately, to counter the extension, the Board mandarins are contemplating ways of dealing with the impending AGM in the last week of September.

It is well known that Srinivasan is set to seek another term as BCCI president, and an extension to the Mudgal Committee is being seen as a hindrance.

“We are meeting soon to take a call on the AGM. But we are also aware that if the election for the office-bearers is affected by the committee’s extension, we will find a way of postponing it till the findings are submitted,” said a top BCCI official.

The BCCI is even prepared for the worst. “The BCCI will go on regardless even at the cost of appointing a dummy,” said the official.

The hearing in the Supreme Court on Monday will offer clarity and what it means for Srinivasan. It will be interesting to see how the moves unfold in the BCCI.
