First, it was Suresh Raina; then Shikhar Dhawan joined in to acknowledge the contribution of Ravi Shastri, the recently-appointed team director.
The resonance of the turnaround, and the players making it clear that Shastri’s presence in the dressing room played a defining role in the team’s performance has reached the corridors of the BCCI.
The Board is now considering engaging him for a tougher assignment --- the ICC World Cup next year.
“Ravi has brought in change and there is no denying that his presence has made a difference. This is one decision we were very sure would click. If you ask me, I am the one who had tremendous faith in Ravi’s ability to do the job. He is the best thing to have happened to the team,” said a top BCCI official, who was single-handedly instrumental in appointing Shastri as the team director.
Pressed further, the official revealed his plan. “We understand he has his professional commitments but we will speak to him after this series to seek clarity. For the World Cup, even for a short time, we are keen to engage him again. But let’s take it one series at a time; we will see how it goes.”
India may have taken an unassailable lead in the ODI series, but the BCCI is not content with the series win.
“We want Ravi and the boys to go for a clean sweep, nothing less than a 4-0. All we want is that the confidence of the team is restored for good. On the future, we will see what can be done after reviewing the performance,” the official concluded.
