By tightening the noose around erring National Sports Federations (NSFs) on Friday, the union sports ministry has sent a strong message to the country’s sports administrators that they either incorporate the sports code that emphasises on good governance, or face the music.

Although the ministry has picked boxing and archery as major medal bets at the 2016 Olympics in Rio, it suspended the boxing federation and de-recognised the archery body for not adhering to the sports code when they went to polls. This indicates that a stern test awaits other NSF's that violates the sports code.

The ministry said re-elections should be held in the boxing federation within 15 days, failing with it will be de-recognised. In case of the archery, because of the direction of the Delhi's High Court, it had ordered that government shall not recognize the archery federation if they violates sports code.

Sports minister, Jitendra Singh, said the players will not suffer. “The government is trying its best to resolve the issue. Since the government does not have direct jurisdiction over any NSF, it might take some time to sort out the matter,” he said. The minister wanted the NSF's to change its constitution and incorporate the sports code.

Although funds will be stopped to the archery and boxing federations, special financial assistance for athletes would be routed through the Sports Authority of India (SAI). “We will make a provision so that athletes don't suffer due to fault of the federation,” sports secretary, PK Deb, said.

To accommodate certain key officials, the National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) and Basketball Federation of India (BFI) had announced changes in their constitution.

NRAI created a new post of advisor to accommodate its long-standing official, Baljeet Singh Sethi. The BFI created the post of CEO to oblige its late chief, Harish Sharma. His widow, Roopam Sharma, holds that post.
