Six national-level women shooters were allegedly manhandled and abused by Guru Nanak Dev University’s (GNDU) assistant director, sports, Kanwar Mandeep Singh, during the All India Inter-University Shooting Championships at the university campus on Tuesday.   The incident took
place in the morning when 72 shooters were protesting at the range as their respective universities had failed to send detailed entries on time.

“Till last year, detailed entries were submitted on the spot. This time, GNDU refused to listen to us. So, we decided to stage a protest. While we were doing so, Mandeep Singh arrived at the range and started manhandling us. Amit of MDU (Maharishi Dayanand) University even got four stitches on the forehead. The official even misbehaved with the girls. He slapped one of the women shooters and used foul language,” Vijay Tomar of Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) told HT.

“This is not the way to deal with girls. We were slapped, pushed and abused by Mandeep Singh,” said national-level shooter Bhavna Singh, also of JMI.

She and five other women shooters later filed a complaint against the official with the deputy commissioner of Amritsar.

When contacted, Mandeep Singh said, “I did not manhandle anybody. The allegations made by the women shooters are baseless.”
