Nadal pulls out of US Open with knee injury

The US Open says that Rafael Nadal has withdrawn from the last Grand Slam tennis tournament of the year because of injury.

Citing left knee tendinitis, the third-ranked Nadal hasn't played a match since June 28, when he was upset in the second round of Wimbledon by 100th-ranked Lukas Rosol.

Nadal also pulled out of the London Olympics and a hard-court tuneup tournament in Cincinnati.The Spaniard won the 2010 US Open to complete a career Grand Slam and was the runner-up to Novak Djokovic last year.

Venus surges ahead
Cincinnati: Venus Williams showed that, almost a year after her health scare, she has the stamina needed as she battled for two hours 23 minutes to beat Russia's Maria Kirilenko 6-3, 6-7, 6-2 at the Cincinnati Open on Tuesday. The seven-times grand slam singles champion winner pulled out of last year's US Open citing an auto-immune disease, Sjogren's Syndrome, which causes fatigue and joint pain.

"I'm doing a lot better than this time last year," Williams told reporters. "So much better. So much better than a couple months of ago as well. I also am learning to deal with everything a lot better.

Tomic advances
Australian Bernard Tomic booked a third-round spot at the ATP Cincinnati Masters on Tuesday, the teen's 6-4, 6-3 defeat of American Brian Baker settling up a likely meeting with Roger Federer.

The top-seeded Swiss still has to win his opening encounter Wednesday against Alex Bogomolov of Russia. "If I get the chance to play Roger, It will be very interesting," said the World No. 49, the only teen in the top 50.
