Amardip chases American dream
NOIDA: A few months from now, Amardip Malik will know if his attempt to move up a level has paid off. He moves to the US later this month in pursuit of the belief that “he belongs there”.
Before that, it would be nice to come away with a win at the Noida Golf Course, a venue which is almost home. At five-under 139 on Thursday, the 31-year-old is two off the lead in the Take Solutions Classic and fancies his chances given the show after two rounds.
It was a different story if one were to go back a little, as Amardip was hard-pressed to choose between golf and well-being.
Leave alone dreaming of securing playing rights on the Web.com tour, the supply line to the PGA Tour, Amardip could not raise his left arm beyond a point. It was a bone defect, which led to inflammation every time he picked up his golf club. He was told surgery was unavoidable, some doctors even suggesting bone grafting.
Coming in contact with expert Sandy Parihar was a boon as Amardip got back to the tee box through fitness drills and determination. He was still recovering when a win came his way at the Noida Masters.
“Playing with Web.com regulars and shooting low (scores) on courses gives an indication of where you stand. Had it not been for the trips, I would have never dreamt of playing there.”
The move will drain his savings, but Amardip is ready to embrace the perils. Money has not been allowed to come between him and what’s dear. That was the case when he purchased his favourite motorbike, and now when he’s chasing an American dream.
