The English, with the memory of the Falklands War, still fresh on their minds will only remember this match, played on June 22, 1986, for the Hand of God goal in the sixth minute of the second half.
Diego Maradona literally punched above his weight and jabbed an innocuous looping back pass past towering English goal-keeper Peter Shilton. Three minutes later Maradona scored what in 2000 was voted by FIFA as the goal of the century.
He scored an eerily similar goal against Belgium in the semifinals and then released Jorge Burruchaga to score the winner in the World Cup final against West Germany with a sublime pass. But, it will always be the genius of this goal, and the infamy of the other, that will be remembered most.
