The strains of “We shall overcome some day”, rent the air. That was how Lajong FC expressed their joy, for not only had they become the first team from the North East to cement a place in the final round of I League 2, but are also all set to get promoted as they overcame Pune FC 2-0 in the fourth round at the Tau Devi Lal Stadium on Tuesday.
The Shillong outfit and Pune FC went into the decider with six points apiece but the victory placed Lajong atop the table with nine points.
Lajong’s first goal came in the 26th minute when striker Sairhohao Tuboi’s half volley from the right found the net. Roming Thanga compounded the misery in the 37th.
Pune tried build some attacking moves but were let down by poor finishing.
Four teams will be promoted after the final round, which is scheduled for April 18. Pune and ONGC need to beat Sesa and Viva respectively to qualify, whereas a draw against Lajong will see Salgoacar through.
All the three matches will be played simultaneously in Delhi, Gurgaon and Faridabad.
