Nicolas Anelka is likely to make his Chelsea debut on Saturday in a London derby against Tottenham Hotspur (1500 GMT) that could serve as a dress rehearsal for next month's League Cup final at Wembley.
Anelka is available for the Premier League match at Stamford Bridge after his 15 million pounds ($29.35 million) transfer from Bolton Wanderers went through on Friday in time for the France forward to be registered.
Third-placed Chelsea are without three strikers -- Didier Drogba and Salomon Kalou on African Nations Cup duty and Andriy Shevchenko who is injured.
Chelsea may be at home but manager Avram Grant expects their London rivals to be a tough nut to crack.
"In the last few games Spurs have played very well," he told reporters. "They are very dangerous with good attacking, good tactics and a good coach (Juande Ramos)."
Later this month, Chelsea go into the second leg of their League Cup semi-final with a 2-1 lead over Everton. Spurs will also be confident of progressing when they host Arsenal having held their north London neighbours to a 1-1 first-leg draw.
Elsewhere on Saturday, league leaders Arsenal host Birmingham City while second-placed Manchester United entertain managerless Newcastle United. Manchester City, in fourth, visit Everton and fifth-placed Liverpool travel to Middlesbrough.
