An Arsenal fan was wounded in the leg during a clash between supporters in Rome ahead of the club's Champions League match with AS Roma, the British Embassy said on Thursday. The fan was aboard a bus near the Olympic Stadium about 90 minutes before kickoff when Roma fans surrounded it and hurling stones at it, the embassy said.
It was not clear if the fan's leg wound was caused by shattered glass or if he had been attacked by Roma fans getting onboard, it said.
The man's condition was not serious. He was treated by doctors at the stadium and was able to watch the match, which Arsenal won 7-6 in a penalty shootout.
Rome newspaper Il Messaggero said police detained one person for the attack.
