Joey Barton seems certain to be fined by Newcastle after being sent off for a wild tackle in Sunday's 3-0 loss to Liverpool and will be suspended for the rest of the season. Making his first start since January, the midfielder was shown the red card for lunging into Liverpool's Xabi Alonso near the corner flag in the 77th minute. The Spain midfielder was carried off the field with heavy bruising on his leg.

"He deserved to be sent off. He has let himself and the club down," said Newcastle manager Alan Shearer, whose team remained in relegation trouble in 18th place in the Premier League standings. "He was not unlucky, the referee was spot-on. There was no need for him to do that in such a position."

Asked if Barton, who has a reputation for foul play and misbehavior on and off the field, would be fined, Shearer said: "We will do what we have to do. He has apologized but it's been done and he is out for the rest of the season."
