Beto helps Dempo stretch lead to seven points

Two second-half goals by Beto helped Dempo overcome city rivals Sporting Clube de Goa 2-1 at the Nehru Stadium here on Thursday.

Sporting Clube drew first blood when Adil Khan headed in a free-kick taken by Bisheshwor Singh in 21st minute. Dempo retaliated and pumped in two goals in the second-half to go seven points clear of Mahindra United in the I-League points table. Dempo now have 44 points from 22 matches, while Sporting remained at the bottom with 20. Mahindra are second with 37 points from 22 matches.

Dempo levelled in the 50th minute through Beto, who, after accepting a pass from Valeriano Rebello, beat goalkeeper Felix with a stinging grounder.

The Brazilian sealed the match after heading in a cross in the stoppage time.

Matches rescheduled

Mohun Bagan will take on arch-rivals East Bengal on May 16 in the 2nd phase of the I-League, it was declared by the All India Football Federation on Thursday. The JCT-East Bengal clash is now slated on May 9.
