Mahesh Bhupathi and Mark Knowles scored a comfortable straight sets win to advance to the second round of the US Open men’s doubles on Thursday.
Bhupathi and Knowles of Bahamas defeated Sweden’s Johan Brunstrom and Thomas Johansson 6-3, 6-4 to advance to the next round where they would be up against Switzerland’s Yves Allegro and Horia Tecau of Romania.
But it was heartbreak for Rohan Bopanna and Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi.
The Indo-Pak pair were ousted after a 7-5, 6-3 loss to Frenchmen Marc Gicquel and Sebastian Grosjean in the opening round.
Bhupathi tasted success in mixed doubles too.
Pairing with Australian Samantha Stosur, the Indian put paid to the hopes of American duo Scott Lipsky and Alexa Glatch with a 6-3, 6-3 scoreline.
Leander Paes too won in mixed doubles where he is partnered by Zimbabwe’s Cara Black.
Paes, who stepped down as Indian Davis Cup skipper, and Black came away 6-3, 6-2 winners against a home combination of Donald Young and Melanie Oudin.
Later, Leander Paes and Lukas Dlouhy overcame a late challenge from Eduardo Schwank and Potito Starace to advance to the pre-quarterfinals. The Indo-Czech pair subdued their rivals 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 in the second round to seal their berth in the round of 16.
