Bhaichung Bhutia and his India mates will train at Barcelona FC as preparation for the Nehru Cup scheduled in New Delhi from August 18-30. Before heading for Spain, they will train in Dubai for 10 days, beginning June 25. India and four or five countries will play the Nehru Cup.
At an executive committee meeting of the AIFF in New Delhi on Friday, the decision to travel to Dubai, general-secretary Alberto Colaco said, was taken because of unavailability of training grounds. Kolkata and Goa was ruled out because of the monsoon, he said, and the Ambedkar Stadium in New Delhi is being renovated.
“While in Barcelona, the squad would get the opportunity to utilise the facilities of the 2008-09 UEFA Champions League winners and play five friendly matches,” the source added. The camp in Dubai ends on July 7 and the one in Barcelona one month later.
Other major decisions
If clubs don't release players for national duty, the AIFF would consider suspending them. This decision follows Mohun Bagan and East Bengal's threat to not release players for preapartory camps.
The AIFF adopted the AFC's 3+1 foreigner rule with the fourth player having to be from Asia but only for the I-League and the AFC Cup.
