Third seeds Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi were left to rue missed opportunities as Rohan Bopanna and Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi outwitted them in straight sets to enter the quarterfinals of the ATP BNP Paribas Open.
Bopanna and Qureshi played a stronger service game to win 6-3, 6-4 and set up an interesting clash against Serbs Novak Djokovic and Viktor Troicki in the last-eight stage. Bopanna and Qureshi made better use of the chances that came their way, converting both the break points in the opening set.
Federer in 4th round
World No. 2 Roger Federer and Australian Open champion Novak Djokovic stormed into the fourth round at Indian Wells with lopsided victories. Ice-cool Federer swept past Argentine Juan Ignacio Chela 6-0, 6-2, while Serb Djokovic extended his perfect record this season to 14-0, pulverising Ernests Gulbis 6-0, 6-1.
Chela was broken five times by Federer in dazzling sunshine, where temperatures peaked at 90 Fahrenheit, as the Swiss master eased to a commanding victory in 58 minutes. "I'm happy it went so well today," the 16-times Grand Slam champion said after ending the match with a rasping backhand winner down the line.
Meanwhile, Kim Clijsters pulled out of the Indian Wells WTA tournament because of a lingering shoulder problem, conceding her fourth-round match to Frenchwoman Marion Bartoli 3-6, 3-1.
Bartoli, the 15th seed, advances to the last eight where she will face 19th-seeded Ana Ivanovic, a 6-4, 6-2 winner against fellow Serb Jelena Jankovic.
