An altercation between East Bengal coach Subhas Bhowmick and their striker Edmilson Marques led to the team’s left wingback Saumik Dey being hit by the Brazilian footballer during training on Thursday morning.

Bhowmick didn’t want to comment, saying he has written to the football secretary Santosh Bhattacharya who too was present. Club sources though said the coach has written saying if Edmilson stays, he won’t. Debabrata Sarkar, the club’s executive committee member, said no decision on whether to punish Edmilson has yet been taken.

According to eyewitnesses, Edmilson was upset at Bhowmick having expelled him from the morning’s training session for unfair tackles. When the squad was cooling down after the session, Edmilson wanted to join but was barred. The player asked why and was told by the coach “because I am the boss”.

Edmilson then charged at the coach and as Saumik intervened, hit him. Other players prevented the situation from going out of hand.
