With three second-half goals, Mahindra United stunned defending champions Churchill Brothers 4-1 in a 14th round I-League match in Fatorda, Goa, on Wednesday. This was Churchill Brothers’ first defeat at home in four years.
Missing key players Steven Dias and N.P. Pradeep, Mahindra United rode a brace each from Mohammed Rafi and Nigerian striker Subair Muritala Ali to the second spot in the standings with 25 points. Churchill Brothers are now fifth with 22.
Rafi struck first, converting a penalty when Churchill Brothers’ defender Rowilson Rodrigues felled Sushant Mathew inside the area.
Muritala made it 2-0, again from the spot. Then, Rafi, adjudged Man of the Match, capped off a superb solo effort to make in 3-0.
