Chelsea bid for Rooney rejected

sports Updated: Jul 18, 2013 00:33 IST

Chelsea’s ambitious bid to sign striker Wayne Rooney from Manchester United has been rejected by the Premier League champions.

The London club was moved to confirm the bid to deny reports that it had offered midfielder Juan Mata or defender David Luiz as part of a 10 million pound ($15 million) offer.

“The official bid was just about a certain about of money ... not one single player was involved in our bid,” said Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho, adding that United “knows we want the player.”

Asked whether Chelsea’s transfer plans amounted to “Rooney or bust, Mourinho replied: “Yes.”

Fuming at Moyes

Rooney has reportedly been left fuming by comments made by manager David Moyes. Rooney’s United career appears over after the striker told Moyes he is “angry and confused” about the manager’s statement that he is now second choice to Robin van Persie.

United refused to comment on Rooney’s anger, though their official position remains that he is not for sale. Despite that, remarks from executive vice-president Ed Woodward signalled that serious offers for Rooney would be considered. AP/Guardian
