Sunil Chhetri stunned Vietnam with a hattrick as India won 3-1 at the Balewadi Sports Complex in Pune on Friday. Chhetri has now scored both international hattricks India have managed in the new millennium. The first was in the final of the AFC Challenge Cup in 2008 when India beat Tajikistan to seal a berth in next January's Asian Cup finals.

This was India's second win in five friendlies since September in preparation for the Asian Cup finals in Doha.

Chhetri, the only Indian to score a hattrick in the final of an international tournament, had shown in the warm-up games in Portugal that his goalscoring skills hadn't been blunted by the months he spent on the bench of Kansas City Wizards. But it had been a while since he had got a goal for India — 13 months and 25 days to be exact. That was against Kyrgyzstan in the Nehru Cup.
