With the win, the Kolkata club was second in the standings after Mahindra United were held 0-0 draw at Pune FC. That draw however helped Mahindra United pip Churchill Brothers to the third position by virtue of better goal difference (7). Both have 22 points. Dempo lead the pack with 26 points from 13 games.
Martins also overtook Mahindra’s Subair Muritala Ali as the leading scorer of the I-League with 11 goals. Ali has 10 goals to his name.
In the day’s third match, East Bengal went level with Mohun Bagan at 20 points after riding a late goal from Yusif Yakubu against Sporting Clube de Goa in Margao. Midfielder Alvito D’Cunha brought down a long ball from defender Uga Okpara and taking the advancing goalkeeper in his stride, lobbed the ball for Yakubu who came in from behind a defender and headed in. Mohun Bagan are fifth while East Bengal are now sixth on goal difference (4).
