DD SPORTS will not telecast the semifinals of the 121st edition of the Osian's Durand Cup live, the Durand Football Tournament Society (DFTS) informed on Wednesday.
Karnal Joginder Singh, secretary of the DFTS, however, said that the channel would telecast live the final of the tournament. "As of now they will cover the final," Singh said.
While the plan was to get DD Sports to air the matches from the quarterfinals, it has been learnt that due to lack of time — it takes time to make elaborate arrangements for a live coverage — it didn't materialise. "Initially, we wanted them to cover the tournament from the quarterfinals stage but there were some remuneration issue.
"We then wrote to them asking to cover only the semifinals and final," Singh said.
"They agreed in principle and today only I got to know that they will be showing the final only," he said.
Asked about DD's inability to cover the semifinals, a source close to DD told HT that "Crews form DD just returned from the Beijing Olympics, so probably that's why they didn't get enough time to make arrangements."
The tournament was telecast live by ESPN last year and ESPN-Star Sports the year before. When asked why DD was preferred this year, the source said, "Because the DFTS assured that they will get DD to cover the tournament free of costs since both are government agencies."
"Since they wanted to get live coverage free of cost, DD was the preferred option."
