Striker Ranty Martins starred with a brace as Dempo Sports Club regained top position in the I-League table defeating a 10-man Air India 3-1 in the round 15 clash of the football championship in Pune on Wednesday.
After a goalless first half at the Balewadi Sports Complex, Martins, who had missed a penalty early in the match, helped the Goan side surge ahead in the 54th minute.
Fellow striker Koko Sakibo doubled the lead for Dempo in the 77th minute. Martins then rounded off the tally in the 88th minute to put the result beyond Air India's control.
The airmen scored a consolation goal through Sandeep Sangha in the second half injury time.
Dempo are now at 33 points from 15 matches.
Churchill Brothers on Wednesday defeated Shillong Lajong FC 3-2 at the latter's turf in a second-phase match.
Churchill dominated over Lajong for most part of the first half but managed to score in the 34th minute when Zenith Mashangva was caught for a hand ball inside the box. Brazilian Roberto Silva's penalty silenced the jampacked football fans at the newly laid turf of JN Stadium.
Having climbed to third place after beating Churchill Brothers, Mohun Bagan are now looking to keep the winning momentum going when they take on Sporting Clube de Goa on Thursday at the Nehru Stadium.
They are currently placed at third spot in points table.
