Sunil Chhetri scored a brace as Dempo consolidated their lead at the summit of the I-League, outclassing an insipid Mohun Bagan 3-1 in their 13th-round encounter in Margao on Tuesday.
The former champions sit pretty with 26 points while Mohun Bagan remained fourth with 20 points. Mohun Bagan concluded their Goa leg with consecutive losses, to Salgaocar and Dempo.
Mohun Bagan started on an aggressive note and Brazilian striker Jose Barreto almost sneaked in one in the opening minutes when he squeezed a shot from an acute angle after receiving a centre from James Singh in the right but the ball ricocheted off the upright.
But it was the defence that let down Mohun Bagan.
In the absence of zonal marking, Nicolau Borges flicked in the first goal near the hour-mark after receiving Valeriano Rebello’s through. But the visitors were quick to strike back as Ryuji rose above the Dempo back-line to head in James’s neat centre from the right.
Dempo, however, ran away with the game with two goals in nine minutes. Right-back Surkumar Singh was not in his designated position when in the 77th minute Chhetri nodded in Anthony Pereira’s cross from the right. Clifton
Gonzales — who came in for Abranches — set up the third goal when he pushed forward a through pass from the right in the 85th minute. Chhetri slotted home the third goal.
