Will Shah Rukh Khan divide Kolkata three days after the city gave him and his Knights a rousing reception? Or will he add more followers to his already enormous fan base and get them to back a champion football team?
These were among the questions that arose after news broke on Friday that West Bengal's brand ambassador has emerged the frontrunner to buy a 50% stake in Dempo, India's most successful football club since 2000.
The reported price: Rs. 30 crore.
Club chairman Shrinivas Dempo said: "We have met Shah Rukh and it is true that there have been talks but nothing has been finalised yet." Despite repeated attempts, Shah Rukh couldn't be contacted.
For Dempo, the only club to make the AFC Cup semifinals, the benefits of this could be enormous. Despite being successful, they have struggled to attract fans even at home. After winning I-League V in April, Dempo had spoken of involving their fans more and even possibly bring the word 'Panjim' as they are based out of the Goa capital.
