All the bang Mohun Bagan and East Bengal generate on Sunday won’t change their I League 3 campaigns ending with a whimper. Mohun Bagan are fifth and East Bengal ninth.
Maybe that is why the interest of fans was at best lukewarm at Mohun Bagan on Saturday morning. Maybe that is why East Bengal went swimming, skipping the traditional final practice.
For all the drama of their 5-3 win last October, Mohun Bagan never managed a realistic title bid.
And though Subhas Bhowmick went, East Bengal’s performance graph didn’t move north either. From players to the coaches, to a man they said the pride, prejudice and tradition involved in such matches always make them standalone contests whose insignificance in the context of the competition doesn’t matter.
