sports Updated: Jan 31, 2012 23:35 IST

Mohun Bagan and East Bengal warmed up for Saturday's derby in contrasting styles as the green and maroon brigade notched up a 3-1 win against United Kerala in Kochi, but the red and golds lost 0-1 to United SC here on Tuesday.

Okolie Odafa struck a brace that fetched Mohun Bagan full points against United Kerala, who played the last five minutes with nine men.

But East Bengal were heartbroken with a surprise last-gasp goal after a corner-kick went awry for them. In the second minute of the second-half stoppage time, East Bengal goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh moved up to meet Mehtab Hossain's corner-kick. It was weak and was cleared by United SC's Shankar Oraon and their striker Kayne Vincent winged down the length of the pitch to score.

Results: Mohun Bagan 3 {Okolie Odafa 37 (pen), 83 (pen); Barreto 87} bt United Kerala 1 (Anil Kumar 47); United SC 1 (Kayne Vincent 90+2) bt East Bengal 0

Climax retires after snub
New Delhi: Ignored for the upcoming AFC Challenge Cup, veteran Indian midfielder Climax Lawrence has announced his retirement from international football and then criticised national coach Savio Medeira who retorted by saying that "a coach cannot tell a player when to retire".

Climax, who led the team to title in the SAFF Championship last December and also in the Asian Cup in Bhaichung Bhutia's absence in Doha, took the call after he was dropped from the 30-member probables for AFC Challenge Cup.

"A senior player is not treated this way. If I had known something like this would happen, I would have retired after the Bayern Munich match," Climax said. Medira, however, was unperturbed by this reaction.

Midfielder Todor Yanchev, the 31-times Bulgarian champions' captain, and defenders Kostadin Stoyanov and Rumen Trifonov tested positive for methylhexanamine after CSKA's 1-0 win over Levski on October 28.

Miyaichi has only played two matches for Arsenal this season, both of them coming as a substitute in League Cup matches. The 19-year-old winger joined the London club a year ago but spent the second half of last season at Dutch club Feyenoord.
