Easy for Bagan, Churchill in semis

sports Updated: Sep 04, 2009 22:56 IST

Everything that had to go right for Mohun Bagan on Friday, did. They struck at the beginning and the end of their 114th IFA Shield opener against George Telegraph and twice more. Even Edeh Chidi’s fluffed penalty in the 22nd minute didn’t matter. Mohun Bagan now need a draw against Mahindra United to enter the semifinals.

At the Barasat stadium, Churchill Brothers had to wait till the 87th minute against Lajong FC before sealing a semifinal berth. Needing to win by two goals to oust Mohammedan Sporting, they were up by Khantang Paite’s strike till Michael Bassey brought down Churchill skipper Okolie Odafe in the penalty box. The I-League champions needed no second invitation and Odafe converted.

Scores: Mohun Bagan 4 George Telegraph 0; Churchill 2 Lajong FC 0.
