Somdev Devvarman was mercilessly beaten by second seed Roger Federer as the Indian crashed out of the men’s singles event on Wednesday.
Federer took out Somdev for the loss of just four games as the 17-time Grand Slam winner handed the Indian a crushing 6-2, 6-1, 6-1 defeat in the second round in just one hour and 12 minutes. The only time Somdev looked like putting up a fight was in the fourth game when he earned two break chances but squandered both.
Indians had a mixed outing in men’s doubles as Mahesh Bhupathi and Rohan Bopanna crashed out in the first round, while Leander Paes and his Austrian partner Jurgen Melzer eased into the next round.
Bhupathi and Bopanna had a forgettable outing as they were stunned 5-7, 4-6 by Polish combination of Tomasz Bednarek and Jerzy Janowicz. Leander gave Indian fans something to cheer about when he and Melzer beat Pierre-Hugues Herbert/ Nicolas Renavand 6-3, 6-3.
