East Bengal extended their winless run in the AFC Cup to 20 matches after a 1-4 drubbing from Yemen’s Al Orouba on Wednesday. This was East Bengal’s fifth consecutive defeat in this season’s AFC Cup but they did score their first goal in this campaign through Edmilson Marques.
East Bengal were already out of contention for a place in the knockout stage after losing their first four matches in the group. Coach Trevor Morgan opted for both Mehtab Hossain and Subodh Kumar to protect the back four while Robin Singh and Sanju Pradhan were operating on the flanks with Tolgay Ozbey the lone striker upfront.
With the match taking place in Jordan due to the political crisis in Yemen, Orouba didn’t have the home advantage but they went in front in the sixth minute after Saumik Dey had conceded a needless free-kick just outside the box. Shaaban Nagar took the shot and Nigerian Paul Effiong diverted it home from close range. Orouba made it 2-0 from another free-kick.
