Reigning champions Manchester United kept the pressure on English Premier League leaders Chelsea with a 4-0 victory away to West Ham on Saturday.
League leaders Chelsea were beaten 1-2 at Manchester City in a match that saw Carlos Tevez score off a spectacular freekick. United went ahead on the stroke of half-time at Upton Park when veteran midfielder Paul Scholes unleashed a ferocious 20-yard shot that England goalkeeper Robert Green could only palm into the net.
Midfielder Darron Gibson, who scored United’s both goals in their mid-week League Cup quarterfinal win over Tottenham, added a second with a right-footed shot into the top corner just after the hour mark. Antonio Valencia put the result beyond doubt in the 71st minute with United’s third before England striker Wayne Rooney added a fourth goal.
Victory saw United move to within two points of Chelsea. Arsenal leapfrogged Tottenham into third place with a 2-0 win over Stoke. Liverpool were held to a draw away to Blackburn.
