Defending champion Goa and Punjab won over their respective opponents by identical 1-0 margins to kick off their quarterfinal league campaign in a positive note in the 64th National Football Championship for Santosh Trophy at Yuba Bharati Krirangan in Kolkata on Thursday.
Substitute Cavin Lobo scored an injury time goal in the 90+1st minute to help Goa pip Karnataka and begin their title defence in style.
In another match played under floodlights, substitute Rohit Kumar struck the decisive goal in the 72nd minute to help Punjab stun Services who were seeded directly into the quarterfinals.
Goa and Punjab both share the lead spot with three points each in Group A.
Much like the previous match where Goa struggled to find the goal, Punjab and Services had some lacklustre display with the first 45 minutes drawing blank.
Punjab dominated Services though Balwant Singh missed a few chances as Services goalkeeper Binu Purusothaman stood tall.
But the tactical substitution of Rohit in place of Balwant in the 70th minute by coach Jagir Singh paid dividends for Punjab.
Two minutes later, Rohit found the back of Services net with a grounder.
Earlier in the match between Goa and Karnataka, Lobo, who replaced Milagres Gonsalves in the 55th minute, scored the decisive goal in the 90+1st minute to help Goa pocket three points in Group A.
