After having fought to stay in the Davis Cup Asia/Oceania Group I stage this year, India has drawn Chinese Taipei in the first round.
The home tie will be held from “Jan 31-Feb 1, 2014 the venue for which will be decided later” stated an AITA release.
India’s only previous encounter with the Chinese Taipei team came in 2009. After a much-publicised player revolt early this year, the AITA executive committee had agreed to the demand that players be consulted for the choice of venues and surface for a home tie. President Anil Khanna said the venue will be announced soon.
While India thrashed Indonesia 5-0 in the relegation play-off tie earlier this year, it was SP Misra’s last tie as captain. The decision to name a new captain had taken a back seat but now, according to sources, Leander Paes is the front runner. It’s been indicated that the Amritrajs have shown interest while Rohit Rajpal’s name has also been doing the rounds.
