Alastair Cook: Really tough five days. It was a good toss to win. the way Haseeb played in the second innings was unbelievable. There were only two chances to win. In the end, they held on. It was really flat for the first three days and turned more and more, but people managed to score runs

Virat Kohli: It is very important to convince yourself that you can get through those tough periods. We could have been better on day one and day two. England are a side that we are not taking for granted

Moeen Ali (Man of the Match): It was a very good pitch. I thought we played spin very well throughout the match

16:46 hrs IST: Chasing 310 in 49 overs was never going to be easy. India lost Gautam Gambhir for 0 before Murali Vijay and Cheteshwar Pujara strung a good partnership. However, Vijay and Pujara departed just before tea but Kohli ensured that India did not collapse. His partnerships with R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja, worth 57 and 40 respectively, ensured India draw the match and enter the Vizag Test with the scoreline 0-0.

16:31 hrs IST: In the air but safe! Kohli tries to reach his fifty in glorious style but ends up skying it to long off, Zafar Ansari runs back but cannot get there.

16:25 hrs IST: The overs are done. But with five minutes remaining, England could bowl a further two overs.

R Ashwin c Root b Zafar Ansari 32 (53)

15:49 hrs IST: Three fours in the over by Ashwin off Ansari. This is good batting practice for the Indian batsmen. England’s bowlers look jaded and tired.

15:46 hrs IST: 11 overs left in the day. Not sure why England are taking the last hour. They should rest their bowlers for the Vizag Test which is just four days away.

15:40 hrs IST: Joe Root comes into the attack and Ashwin brings up the 100 with a square cut to deep point. Remember, England can call the game off any time now.

Virat Kohli and R Ashwin shared a gritty partnership to steady India in the final session. (BCCI)

15:33 hrs IST: Only 15 overs remain. Only 57 minutes remain for the game to end. Will England offer the draw or will they take the final hour?

15:30 hrs IST: Only 16 overs remain. Will the draw be offered? Or will England take the final hour?

15:25 hrs IST: Kohli and Ashwin are battling on as Ben Stokes and Moeen operate in tandem. However, both seem to have gotten their eye in.

15:16 hrs IST: Ashwin releases the pressure by driving Moeen through the vacant cover point region for a boundary. India are still hanging in there but England might stretch it into the final hour as they look for the remaining six wickets. Catch all live scores here.

15:14 hrs IST: England opt for the review. A LBW call against R Ashwin. Moeen got this delivery to break back in and Ashwin had a long stride forward, but umpire’s call on both impact and hitting the stumps. Ashwin survives and England lose a review.

15:10 hrs IST: 20 overs remain in the day, India need 225 more to win. On this wicket, even with Kohli, it looks like a near-impossible task.

15:05 hrs IST: Ashwin breaks the shackles by getting off the mark with a boundary. He was stuck on 0 for 11 balls.

Virat Kohli of India was in confident touch as he aimed to get India to safety in the final session. (BCCI)

15:00 hrs IST: Kohli is holding firm but India cannot afford a slip-up. The last 90 minutes of this Test match is upon us. For India, it is now survival rather than going for the win.

14:55 hrs IST: WICKET! Moeen Ali gets a wicket this time and this makes it very interesting for England. The ball hits a crack and keeps low, Rahane aims to cut but gets hit on the pad and hits off stump, poor shot and India are 71/4, needing another 239 runs for a win. Kohli key for India. Catch all live scores here.

Ajinkya Rahane b Moeen Ali 1 (5)

14:48 hrs IST: WICKET! Adil Rashid strikes again. Vijay gets an inside edge onto the front pad and Haseeb Hameed takes a sharp catch. India are three down.

Murali Vijay c Haseeb Hameed b Adil Rashid 31, India 68/3

14:41 hrs IST: Kohli continues to bat aggressively as he drills a flighted delivery past Rashid for a boundary straight down the ground.

14:39 hrs IST: Only 29 overs remain and 256 runs more to get. Remember, play can be called off early either when there is 15 overs left or one hour to go, whichever is the quickest.

14:37 hrs IST: This particular passage of play will be very crucial for both teams. Although, the most likely result will be a draw. But, Kohli will be aiming to get some runs for the Vizag Test.

Adil Rashid took the key wicket of Cheteshwar Pujara just before tea on the final day of the Rajkot Test. (BCCI)

14:32 hrs IST: Welcome back for the final session and Kohli gets going with a bang, starts off with a boundary off Rashid

14:12 hrs IST: That will be Tea. India are 49/2, still 261 runs away and just 32 overs remaining. One hour after tea will determine the outcome of the match.

14:08 hrs IST: WICKET! Pujara missed a straight one from Rashid and he has walked off. Flatter delivery that skids through, Pujara is trapped in front. However, the ball pitched outside leg stump, the batsman chose not to review

Cheteshwar Pujara LBW Adil Rashid 18, India 47/2

14:01 hrs IST: Super bowling from Rashid. He bowls a flatter one which Vijay is just about to keep out. Next ball, he gets a big legbreak going and the batsman is beaten. Nine minutes to go for Tea.

13:53 hrs IST: Vijay continues to target Ansari. Makes room and uses his feet to drill it wide of the fielder at mid off for a boundary.

13:47 hrs IST: Dropped! Easy catch and Broad shells it. Tossed up from Ansari and it spins away, Pujara gets a leading edge but Broad drops it at point. That would have given England another advantage.

13:46 hrs IST: After 11 overs, India are 31/1, a run-rate of just under 3. Hard perhaps to get to the target, but they will be wanting to preserve their wickets.

13:42 hrs IST: Moeen Ali is into the attack now. Will India slowly build up an attack for the final session?

Murali Vijay once again got off to a good start in the second innings. (BCCI)

13:37 hrs IST: Vijay uses his feet and launches Ansari over long on for a boundary. He does that very often to disturb the rhythm of the spinner. Follows it up with yet another boundary. In fact, that was a dropped catch from Ansari. He could not hold on.

13:29 hrs IST: Another boundary by Pujara and India are slowly making a move on. Still a long way to go though. Will they, won’t they?

13:23 hrs IST: Vijay gets going with two boundaries off Broad. India are making a move on.

13:18 hrs IST: Magnificent shot from Pujara and the crowd erupt at the SCA. Overpitched from Woakes and Pujara laces the drive past extra cover for a boundary. First run after 23 balls.

13:15 hrs IST: India have not scored a run in three overs. With Gambhir’s dismissal, it could be shutters down for India and they might just be looking to hang in there.

13:09 hrs IST: WICKET! Woakes strikes and Gambhir once again falls in a similar way. Short ball angling away outside off, Gambhir plays away from the body and fends at it, gets an outside edge to second slip. India suffer an early jolt.

Gautam Gambhir c Joe Root b Chris Woakes 0 (6).

13:05 hrs IST: Chris Woakes opening from the other end. So far, Vijay and Gambhir are not showing an aggressive intent to chase. Still too early?

12:59 hrs IST: Out come the Indian openers. Stuart Broad will open the bowling. Two slips and a gully in place. Shortish mid wicket in position. Catch all live score here

12:52 hrs IST: WICKET! Alastair Cook has holed out for 130 and England have declared at 260/3 declared, a lead of 309 runs. India will be needing 310 to win off 49 overs. Will they go for it? Or will they play safe?

Alastair Cook went past 1000 Test runs in India as England piled on the runs on the final day in Rajkot. (BCCI)

12:45 hrs IST: Brilliant shot from Stokes. Umesh bowls this full and wide outside off, Stokes moves across and whips it to deep mid wicket.

12:41 hrs IST: England’s lead is now past 300. With only 53 overs left in the day, they may be tempted to put India in and cause a bit of panic.

12:37 hrs IST: India opt for a review. They think Cook has edged Yadav to the keeper. Replays in: Bat miles away from ball. No spike on RTS! Poor review from India and their DRS woes continue.

12:35 hrs IST: Umesh Yadav is into the attack now. India will be aiming to stop the leak of runs. Partnership between Stokes and Cook has crossed 50, with Cook also going past 1000 runs in Tests in India.

12:30 hrs IST: Both Cook and Stokes are punishing India now. Stokes slams a couple of boundaries and the lead is now nearing 300.

12:26 hrs IST: Stokes and Cook are calmly stretching England’s advantage. They are determined to not give an inch to India on the final day.

12:19 hrs IST: Ashwin resumes after lunch but England continue to tackle him well. Kohli has spread the field, ensuring that boundary-hitting is made harder.

12:15 hrs IST: Stokes employs the reverse sweep and he finds the third man fence. The message is clear. Get 300-350 lead and insert India just before Tea.

12:13 hrs IST: During the lunch break, the cracks on the pitch had widened but the grass on the wicket is ensuring that the pitch does not become an absolute dustbowl.

Alastair Cook notched up his 30th Test ton as England continued to dominate the Rajkot Test. (BCCI)

12:10 hrs IST: Welcome back for the second session. England will be aiming to take the lead in the range of 300-350. India, on the other hand, will be targeting some quick wickets. Kohli has spread the field. Amit Mishra will resume after lunch.

11:35 hrs IST: Alastair Cook has put England in a great position with his 30th Test century. England’s lead is 260 and they will be aiming for quick runs after lunch.

11:27 hrs IST: While Cook is taking singles and twos, Stokes slog sweeps Mishra to deep square leg for a boundary. To make things worse, Umesh Yadav does not spot the ball. This will not make Mishra’s mood any better.

11:23 hrs IST: There it is! What a moment for Captain Cook! Pushes a flighted delivery from Mishra down the ground to bring up his 30th Test century, 6th against India and 5th in India. He is truly the master of Asian conditions. Take a bow!

11:20 hrs IST: Cook survives some anxious moments as Mishra beats him on the outside edge. A loud shout for an LBW as Cook looks to work it to the leg side but gets hit on the pad, probably pitching outside the line of leg stump.

Amit Mishra picked up two wickets as England searched for quick runs on the final day of the Rajkot Test. (BCCI)

11:14 hrs IST: WICKET! Root goes! Rash shot but I think England are going for some quick runs. Tossed up delivery, Root attempts the slog sweep but is caught by Saha. Ben Stokes is the new batsman so England are looking at a declaration in some point of time.

Joe Root c Wriddhiman Saha b Amit Mishra 4 (5), England 192/2, lead by 241

11:10 hrs IST: Mishra errs in his line and it is a short ball well down the leg side, Cook pulls it down to fine leg for a boundary. He nears his century.

11:05 hrs IST: WICKET! Finally India have the breakthrough and it is Amit Mishra. Wonderful knock from Hameed ends. Tossed up delivery and Hameed goes for the slog sweep but toe-ends it back to Mishra who takes a sharp catch, umpires check for the no-ball and it is mighty close. However, the umpires rule him out. Replays show that Mishra’s front foot was just fine when it landed. Fine knock from the youngster though. He would have been disappointed in not reaching a century but his team will truly appreciate this knock.

Haseeb Hameed c and b Amit Mishra 82 , England 180/1, lead by 229 runs.

10:59 hrs IST: Cook moves into the 90s now. Jadeja is not able to keep the runs down. Kohli has strengthened the off side now. It is a 7-2 field.

Alastair Cook neared yet another century against India as he and Haseeb Hameed continued to pile on the runs for England. (BCCI)

10:55 hrs IST: Superb shot from Cook. Full and wide ball from Umesh, the skipper presents the full face of the bat and laces the drive past the gap at cover for a boundary. He moves closer to yet another century.

10:48 hrs IST: Ravindra Jadeja in for the first time today and he immediately appeals for a LBW. Cook goes back to work a delivery to mid wicket but gets hit on the pad, missing leg by my estimation. Catch all live scores here

10:47 hrs IST: Umesh Yadav continues to be unlucky. In the fifth ball of 55th over, he gets a good length delivery to cut back in late from over the wicket, Cook is saved by an inside edge. The next ball, Hameed gets a bottom edge that falls in front of slip for a couple. Nothing going right for India.

10:42 hrs IST: Ashwin continues and he is given an attacking field. Slip, short leg, short fine leg is in position. The plan seems to be to dismiss Cook either by sweeping or bowling him round his legs.

10:37 hrs IST: Umesh struggling a bit with his line. Slightly wide outside off, Cook uses the pace and runs it down to the third man fence where Amit Mishra cannot stop a boundary despite the dive. Cook has almost caught up with Hameed.

10:30 hrs IST: England’s lead is now 200. With the first hour not yielding any results, India will be hoping for a dramatic collapse from the visitors if they have to get any chance to win this Test.

10:25 hrs IST: England’s lead is nearing 200. More this partnership consumes time, the more the match will slip away from India’s grasp. Anyways, Kohli was facing an uphill task. Getting over 200 runs on the final day on this pitch could be a tricky proposition.

10:23 hrs IST: Ashwin lands it on the rough spot outside off, it kicks up from the surface and a puff of dust emerges, Hameed gets an inside edge onto pad but it lands safely to where silly point would have been. Next ball, Kohli puts in silly point but Hameed leaves it. No point in shutting the barn door when the horse has bolted.

10:21 hrs IST: Appeal for an LBW but not given! Umesh gets this delivery to tail back in sharply and Hameed almost falls over as he looks to whip it away to mid wicket, he gets hit on the pad but umpire Dharmasena does not give it. Wriddhiman Saha is interested in going for the review but Kohli is not interested. Probably swinging too much and missing leg. Or maybe, Hameed got some bat on to it. Replays in, yes, he had gotten an inside edge onto pad.

10:18 hrs IST: Edged but just wide of first slip! Vijay had too little time to move. Umesh gets this full delivery to straighten outside off, Hameed is lured into the drive but gets an outside edge that flies past Vijay at slip and to the third man fence. Kohli claps and tells Umesh, “ Well bowled, boy”.

Ravichandran Ashwin created some chances but Alastair Cook and Haseeb Hameed tackled him well. (BCCI)

10:14 hrs IST: In the air but safe! Cook attempts the sweep shot but gets a bit of a top edge, it lands safely at mid wicket. The ball had gripped away outside off and it bounced a bit more too, thus Cook had to fetch the sweep from outside off stump.

10:12 hrs IST: Umesh bowls in the right lengths and areas but England are just ensuring that they do not commit an error in judgment. Catch all live scores here.

10:07 hrs IST: Umesh Yadav is into the attack now. He can also reverse swing the ball. Will he strike or will England see him off as well?

10:06 hrs IST: Ashwin is staying over the wicket to the left-handed Cook. Normally, he has more success against the left-handers from round the wicket. Maybe there is not enough rough outside the off stump for him to exploit.

10:04 hrs IST: Intense discussion between Ashwin and Kohli regarding the field settings. Only short leg in place and no silly point. No slips even. Interesting.

10:01 hrs IST: Shami is bowling well over 85 mph and in the last ball of the 45th over, he got the ball to tail back late but Hameed watched it carefully and defended it back to the bowler.

09:58 hrs IST: Poor effort from Amit Mishra. Shortish delivery from Shami, Cook opens the bat face and steers it to third man but Mishra puts in the dive a bit too early and allows the ball to go to the boundary. Ashwin and Kohli both disappointed.

Haseeb Hameed has demonstrated remarkable technique in tackling the spinners in the Rajkot Test. (BCCI)

09:54 hrs IST: So far, things are going well for England. Hameed and Cook are tackling Ashwin and Shami well. However, it is only the start of the day.

09:47 hrs IST: Cook pulls a short ball from Shami to fine leg to bring up his 53rd fifty and eighth against India. He really loves to play in the sub-continent. Well played, skipper!

09:43 hrs IST: Visuals from day 4’s play showed Haseeb’s father getting emotional when his son reached a fifty. It was indeed a proud moment for his family who is originally from Bharuch, Gujarat.

09:42 hrs IST: The first boundary of the day comes thanks to a streaky shot from Hameed. Shami once again gets this delivery to straighten just outside off but the batsman plays it with soft hands, the edge flies along the ground but past the gap between slip and gully to the third man fence.

09:38 hrs IST: A bit of assistance in the wicket for Shami. In the last ball, he almost made Hameed play to a full ball outside off but it just nipped away late, good stuff from the fast bowler. England 116/0. Catch all the live scores here .

09:35 hrs IST: Mohammed Shami will begin proceedings from the other end. A slip and gully in place. Will he get some assistance from the pitch?

09:32 hrs IST: Ashwin is getting some spin, there are some puffs of dust in the good length area as the ball breaks back in, however, Hameed is playing it calmly.

09:29 hrs IST: Out come the England batsmen, Haseeb Hameed and Alastair Cook. Huge responsibility on their shoulders as they aim to get England to safety. Ashwin to begin proceedings.

09:27 hrs IST: The Indian players, led by skipper Virat Kohli, are coming out to the middle. They will be hoping to strike early and cause panic in the England team.

09:23 hrs IST: Haseeb Hameed, at 19 years of age, has already made a mark in international cricket with a wonderful fifty. Can he achieve something special today?

09:14 hrs IST: With a lead of 163 heading into the final, Alastair Cook’s team will have only one objective and that is to bat and bat until Tea. In all probability, this Test is heading for a draw but one never knows with batting collapses.

09:08 hrs IST: While players get ready for action in sunny Rajkot, over in Hobart, after the melee of 15 wickets on day one, the second day’s play between Australia and South Africa has been washed out due to rain.

09:05 hrs IST: The Rakot pitch on day four was assisting the spinners. There was turn but batsmen from both teams have played with discipline and not thrown their wickets away.

09:01 hrs IST: A warm welcome to the fifth and final day of the first Test between India and England at Rajkot. So far, on four days, there have been only 20 wicekts taken. Will we see something dramatic today?

Day 5 of the Rajkot Test between India vs England could be a day for personal milestones. With the pitch still good to bat on, England are unlikely to lose their grip on a game they have dominated.

Debutant Haseeb Hameed struck his maiden fifty and shared an unbroken century partnership with captain Alastair Cook to push England’s lead over India to 163 runs on day four.

On Day 4 on Saturday, India conceded a 49-run first innings lead after Ravichandran Ashwin hit 70 to deny England a bigger cushion.

It was first time an overseas team managed to get the first innings lead in a Test in India in the last four years. The last team to gain first innings lead over India was also England at Nagpur in 2012-13.

England’s leg-spinner Adil Rashid picked up four wickets, leaving a cue for Virat Kohli to introduce his spinners early when England batted for the second time. But Cook and Hameed batted with caution to see the day off quite comfortably.
