Trabzonspor, a team that failed to initially qualify for Europe’s elite tournament, ripped up the Champions League formbook in style with a 1-0 win at beleaguered 2010 winners Inter Milan in their group stage debut.

Ondrej Celustka struck 14 minutes from time to leave Inter reeling. The Turkish runners-up, only in the competition after Fenerbahce were withdrawn because of match-fixing allegations, looked comfortable throughout before Celustka expertly hooked the ball in on the slide after Halil Altintop hit the bar.

Just before the goal, Inter substitute Diego Milito spurned two gilt-edged chances but the hosts were generally poor in their opening clash.

Real Madrid got a gritty 1-0 win at Dinamo Zagreb despite having Marcelo sent off.

Before seeing red for diving Marcelo showed his better side by carving out the chance which Angel De Maria stylishly converted in the 53rd minute.

In Group A, regarded as the toughest of the eight, Bayern Munich produced an authoritative display to win 2-0 away at Spanish club Villarreal.

Bayern, whose stadium will host the final next May, earned an early lead in their 250th European fixture through Toni Kroos before Rafinha sealed victory late on.
