Petra Kvitova overcame a mid-match slump to claim her first title of the season with a 7-5, 2-6, 6-3 victory over China's Li Na in the Montreal Cup on Monday.
In an entertaining but erratic encounter between two former major winners, the fifth seed's first tournament win since last October's WTA Championship will lift the Czech's confidence ahead of the US Open starting at the end of the month. "It is great to have a good result in the Montreal Cup before the US Open. Finally I have played well," the world number six told reporters. "It is a great preparation. I have played some good matches here and I hope that I can continue that."
Cincinnati: Old pro Nikolay Davydenko, a former top five threat, schooled Ukrainian young gun Alexandr Dolgopolov 6-1, 6-1 on Monday to get off to a rollicking start at the ATP-WTA Cincinnati Masters.
The 31-year-old Russian left Dolgopolov, eight years his junior, wondering what happened to the game which produced a title in Washington eight days ago on pre-US Open hardcourts.
Since beating German Tommy Haas for the final in the American capital, Dolgopolov has lost two matches, winning just four games in the process.
Cincinnati: Serena Williams arrived at the Western & Southern Open with an Olympic gold medal and a chance to win another tournament she had never won before. During a pre-tournament news conference on Monday, Williams was confused about whether she had taken a title in Cincinnati.
Williams said: "Maybe I didn't. I can't keep up."
