Subhash Bhowmick's East Bengal made it a hattrick of defeats when Lajong FC knocked the Red and Gold out. Kyrshan Lynshing struck the all-important goal after Daniel Bidemi laid the ball for him from the touchline. The way the East Bengal coach walked off after the 0-1 defeat was perhaps an indication that the resignation was on its way.
Chirag United and Tata Football Academy (TFA) did it in the IFA Shield a few days ago, and now a bunch of newcomers from Shillong humiliated the giants.
Bagan drub ONGC
It's still early days, but Mohun Bagan certainly made a statement on Wednesday. Surkumar Singh proved his worth in the Green and Maroon jersey, not once, but twice. Edeh Chidi, as usual, got onto the scorers' list. The Nigerian, like Surkumar, also scored a brace. However, what best characterised their 5-1 drubbing of ONGC in their quarterfinal league match of the 122nd Durand Cup were, first Jose Barreto's blinder, and then, Surkurmar's long ranger.
Not one for hyperbole, the Brazilian's 43rd minute on-the-turn shot that sailed into the net, amazed the man himself who, just a few moments ago, saw Billy Fung Nazary save his spot-kick. Barreto made up for that, and he did it in style.
The opener came when an unmarked Surkumar unleashed a power-packed right-footer after James Singh's corner rebounded off the post. Moments later, Chidi used a goalmouth melee to his advantage when to tap in his first, and Bagan's second. Barreto got into the act then but the match was as good as over much before the Brazilian's special that left the crowd in awe.
