Lionel Messi turns 27 on June 24 during the World Cup. Argentina are hoping this birthday would be special.
Sure, Diego Maradona thinks Messi doesn’t need a World Cup winners’ medal to prove that he is the best. Speaking to the La Nacion newspaper recently, Maradona said: “Messi doesn’t need to win the World Cup to be the best player in the world. (If he did) it would be great for Argentina, the fans and Lio, but (winning) a World Cup or not won’t take away any of his achievements up to now to be among the greatest.”
But there are many neutrals and Argentines who think Messi needs to win the World Cup to be an all-time great. Especially because Messi is finally leading an Argentina team that looks balanced. Coach Alejandro Sabella has built his side around Messi to a far greater extent than his predecessors and now at the peak of his career, this could well be his best chance to emulate Maradona and bring the World Cup home.
“The team is looking good and we are getting on well together but in a World Cup anything can happen, it is very difficult,” said Messi going into his third World Cup.
